Maui Airports
There are only three Maui airports: Kahului, Kapalua & Hana.
Kahului Airport is the major one, the largest, and the only one to fly to and from US mainland or other countries, outside Hawaiian Islands. The code letters are OGG. Use this link to go directly on Kahului Airport’s official site. Situated near Kahului, the largest city in Maui, occupies 1,391 acres, and is the second busiest airport of the State of Hawaii.

Kapalua Airport, also called Kapalua West Maui Airport, is regional. The flights are only domestic (between Hawaiian Islands); you cannot fly outside Hawaii from here. It is located a few miles away from Kapalua, West side of Maui, closer to Kanapali and Lahaina. The code letters for this airport are JHM.
Hana Airport is a very small Maui airport, close to Hana town. The flights are limited, and you can fly to here from Kahului Airport, or Honolulu. Not to mention that you have to drive almost the entire Road to Hana to reach it. It is served by commuter airlines and is used by residents and visitors to Hana.
Arrivals:
Kahului is the airport you will arrive when flying to Maui from outside the Hawaiian Islands.
Here you will find public parking, taxi drivers waiting to pick you up if you need, or shuttles to drop you at the nearby location of one of the car rental companies. It is nothing to worry about. All car rental companies are located outside Maui airport, but very close, just a few minutes drive. A free shuttle will pick you up and drop, conveniently, in front of the car rental of your choice, every 10-15 minutes (do not pay more for a reservation that is claiming a location “inside the airport”). I definitely recommend to rent a car in Maui, even if you don’t plan to stay too long. It is very important to make a reservation online, or over the phone, to make sure that the type of car you need, will be available. And why not do it anyways, when it is free and can be canceled? I am actually doing a bit more than that: I am reserving a car at least one month ahead of my trip, then shop for better deals online, and most of the time I am finding one.
When you already there, without a car reserved, some car companies have their desks out, on the curb and you can see what is still available (Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz and National).
Departures:
Again, we will talk about Kahului only, because this is the only one you can use for flights outside Hawaiian Islands.
For international departures, make sure you arrive at least 2 hours ahead, for check-up. You never know what can cause delays. Maui airports are more or less the same with other American airports. For inter-island flights, most of the time is necessary to arrive 90 minutes ahead, but the best is to check with your airline. If you need to park your vehicle at the airport or return a rental car, please add at least 30 additional minutes to your arrival time.
You can follow directions from Kahului airport official site:"From Lahaina, you can reach the main Maui airport, Kahului, by taking Honoapiilani Highway (HI-30) south approximately 16 miles. Turn right onto Kuihelani Highway (it turns into Dairy Road) and drive approximately 6 miles. Cross Hana Highway (road name changes to Keolani Place) and drive approximately 1.5 miles from intersection to the terminal facility".
From Kihei, the fastest growing city in Maui, it is a shorter drive to Kahului: drive northwest on South Kihei Road or Piilani Highway. Make a right onto Mokulele Highway (Kahului direction and highway turns into Puunene Avenue). Turn right at the intersection of Dairy Road. Cross Hana Highway (road name changes to Keolani Place) and drive approximately 1.5 miles from intersection to the terminal facility (directions from Kahului airport official site). Welcome to Maui. If you are here the first time, you will soon start to fall in love with this island. Then, like me, and many, many others, start thinking how to move to Maui, one day…
