Map of Maui
Here is a general Map of Maui, with the main locations, from Kpalua, Napili, Kaanapali, Lahaina, to Kihei, Wailea, Paia & Hana.

Maui Hawaii can be divided into six island regions: West Maui, South Maui, Central Maui, North Shore, Upcountry and East Maui. Of course, each region has its own character:
West Maui
West Maui is a bit more humid and is reachable by a long, ocean front highway. If you are driving and it is a wavy day, your car might get splashed by the waves! This is how close the ocean is to the road. It really is a wonderful drive.
West Maui include Honokowai, Kapalua, Napili, Kahana, Kaanapali and the historical town Royal Lahaina. While Kapalua is all about world-class golf and luxury accommodations, Lahaina, formal capital of Hawaii is a charming waterfront town and one of the best places to discover in Maui!
If you are driving past Napili, Kapalua & Nakalele Point - the famous Blowhole , the road is changing… BE AWARE: you reached Maui’s rugged North Shore. I have a map of Maui that is mentioning: “Caution, the road along this North side of Maui is for the most part a narrow, winding one-lane road. Drive at your own risk!” Furthermore, even your rental car insurance will not cover you here if something happen. Think at locals, driving this road daily! Well, if you prefer to stay safe versus adrenaline rush adventures, then look at the pictures below, and be aware that as soon as you pass the spectacular blowhole, the scary road is very, very close. You don't even know when you start driving on it, and it is impossible to return due to the size of the road. The best is to stop at the school bus, grab some treats and return (actually the road is quite scary even before reaching the school bus)...
A driving Map of Maui:
South Maui
From Maalaea and Kihei to Wailea and Makena is warmer and dryer. Kihei is one of the fastest growing town in US, while Wailea and Makena are offering upscale accommodations, shopping, golf courses and most beautiful, long Maui beaches. You can notice on the Maui map above that in this area is a lava field. For me, the lava field near La Perouse Bay was a unique view. I was felling like I am lost on another planet...
Central Maui
Central Maui was the inspiration for Maui’s nickname, “The Valley Isle.” In central Maui is the Iao Valley where you will find the famous Iao Needle. Here are the towns of Kahului and Wailuku. Maui’s major airport is located in Kahului, the most commercial city in Maui. Wailuku is a small charming town with lots of local family business. Keep handy your map of Maui to help you locate the main attractions in this area.
North Shore
The North Shore of Maui has a few renewed attraction points: Hookipa Beach Park, the “windsurfing capital of the world,” and the unique, colorful, historic plantation town Pa’ia. Now, Pa’ia is filled with wonderful boutiques, art galleries and original, organic restaurants, coffee shops and markets. This is the place where I saw Dalai Lama during his first visit in Maui, in April 2007…
Upcountry Maui
Upcountry Maui is on western slopes of 10,000 ft Mt. Haleakala, "The House of the Sun" and the largest dormant volcano in the world. Driving to the top for a sunrise or sunset is a spiritual experience one should have in a lifetime. Upcountry Maui is cool – both meanings. It is probably the best place where you can build a retreat. Peaceful, cooler than the coastal Maui, Upcountry Maui is warm enough, and with lots of organic farms and gardens. One of my favorite place here is Maui's unique lavender field: Alii Kula Lavender. Due to the higher elevation here, the plants are thriving and the views are stunning. The air is lavender scented...
East Maui
East Maui = Heavenly Road to Hana. This is a must do, even if you are in Maui just for a few days! It is breathtaking! Road to Hana is all about the Journey. Hana town is not a big destination. It is a lovely, peaceful and remote small town, but the road is everything! Tropical rainforest, bamboo, waterfalls, even a Garden of Eden! Unspoiled beauty, with colorful beaches, including black sand! Pass Hana and The Seven Pools, and you can stop at Ono Organic Farms for a tour and some delicious, organic coffee. Don't forget to take with you a map of Maui - and a good one. Or, even better: a few Maui maps! There are so many places you may want to know about and visit. Believe me, it is very easy to miss them while driving the road to Hana!
