Maui, Hawaii Climate

Hawaii climate is warm all year round, with temperatures ranging from 65-80 F (18-27 C) from December to February, and 69-87 F (21-31C) for the rest of the months.

The hottest is in the summer, August & September, and coldest, December and January. This is why from mid-December through mid-April is considered high season in Maui. Compared with other vacation spots, the price difference between high season and low is not huge; you can expect only a 10- 15% discount during the low season.

What is Interesting About Hawaii Climate?

The island of Maui, Hawaii, has microclimates. In the same day, you might get a very warm day in Wailea, a bit of rain in Lahaina, followed by stunning rainbows, a freezing morning experience on top of Haleakala together with an amazing sunrise, and be soaked wet on the Road to Hana. It is easy to enjoy your preferred weather on the island, just by driving around a couple of miles!

The warmest area is South Maui: Makena, Wailea, Kihei, followed by Maalea area.

Maui West side is slightly cooler and receiving a bit more rain than the south part. From Lahaina, to Kanapali & Napili is still perfect for sun bathing.

If you like a cooler climate for your Hawaiian vacation, then spend more time in Upcountry Maui area, with lush, tropical gardens and lots of organic farms.

For a taste of a typical tropical weather, with lots of surprises, then drive the heavenly Road to Hana, rain or shine: if it is raining, the sun will come back, and if it is the best weather, you may end soaking wet on one of the trails. So, be prepared for any type of weather while driving towards Hana town, and enjoy the journey through the tropical rain forest!

If you are driving to the top of Haleakala volcano, especially in the middle of the night, to witness the sunrise, it will be a fantastic experience, but it can get really, really cold. A classic picture of Haleakala sunrise is always containing people wrapped in blankets, shivering - I was one of them ;)

Trade Winds & Hawaii Climate:

Trade Winds are flowing over the island of Maui most of the time, caressing the palm trees with a specific, tropical sound. Sometimes they are not so gentle, showing no mercy to your hairstyle, but rarely reaching a violent 50 miles per hour. Luckily, the Hawaiian Islands are rarely hit by hurricanes (the most recent one was in 1991 and struck Kauai and a part of Oahu, leaving Maui untouched).

One of the greenest places on Earth, Maui often receives rain showers, followed by bright sunshine or even light rainfall while the sun is shining. This is really beautiful & fresh, and is culminating with one, or even a double rainbow ( “anuenue” in Hawaiian language). Most rainbows I saw in Maui were in Lahaina area (and I love the double ones!).

Even though Hawaii climate is mild, be prepared to avoid sunburns, and not only on the South Maui beaches. If you are prone to sunburns, definitely avoid to stay in the sun between 11:00 AM & 3:00 PM, wear sunglasses, hat & apply a high quality sun-block (not sunscreen, loaded with chemicals). Mana Foods store in Paia is loaded with great, healthy products, or try the new Whole Foods Market located near Kahului airport.

Maui surfing: the ocean surrounding Hawaiian Islands is warm and great for swimming, but sometimes the biggest, spectacular waves are forming ‘out of the blue’ making Hawaii a surfer’s paradise.

Maui's Hookipa Beach is actually considered to be the best surfing place in the world. Maui, Hawaii’s climate is great, creating the best conditions for an ideal vacation! Once you get a chance to feel the weather, you will have trouble getting used to the climate anywhere else…
